1. Collar Media

The standard collar media is 1" wide and can be printed in 6", 12", 18", 24" or 30" lengths to be used for patient identification collars and the labeling of patient belongings.

The small animal collar media is 1" wide and can be printed in 6", 12", 18", 24" or 30" lengths. It also has a center perforation along the length of the roll. This allows the collar media to be creased and then torn along the perforation, providing two 1/2" media strips that can be used for patient identification collars and the labeling of patient belongings. This 1/2" collar width permits greater freedom of movement for smaller animals.

When using the small animal collar media, it is important to follow these instructions:

  1. After printing, fold lengthwise along the perforation and then fold it again in the opposite direction along the perforation to create a crease.
Warning: if you don't create a crease before trying to tear the collar media, it may tear in undesirable places such as across the section with printed patient information.
  2. Slowly tear the collar along the perforation; hold the media close to the perforation with each tear and slowly work across the full length of the collar until it is in two pieces. The top half of the media is for the collar; the bottom half can used as labels for patient articles (food, toy, leash, blanket, etc.).

2. Driver Installation

PD-700 Driver installation instructions.

The following downloads are for the PD-700 printer shipped before 10/15/2007. If you purchased your printer on or after 10/15/2007, you will need to download the driver instructions for the new PD-700II.

PD-700II Driver installation instructions.

(for printer shipments on or after 10/15/2007) The print drivers are shipped with the printers in CD form, and are not available for download due to their proprietary nature.

Never install a third party driver. PetDetect* has developed a specialized driver to function with your kennel or practice management software.

3. Installation Tips/Printer Sharing

Important note: Do not plug your printer into your computer until asked to do so.
  1. Insert the CD and follow the installation instructions packaged with the printer. If you have lost the instructions, you may reprint them from the links above.
  2. If you have a plastic spacer, ensure that it is placed in the printer to the right of the media. If you don't have a spacer, ensure that you have two extra media rolls placed to the right of the media. Both options are illustrated below. Both options hold the left media roll in the proper position for printing. The media will unroll from the bottom with the white backing facing up and should be routed under the spring bar as illustrated below.
  3. Be sure you are installing the correct driver. The newest driver is on a CD that states "PetDetect Driver Software, Windows 32 and 64-bit drivers" and has no version number. This driver works for the PD-700 and PD-700II and will install on Windows 2000, Windows XP, Windows Vista® and Windows 7 as well as Windows Server® 2003, Windows Server 2008 and Windows Server 2008 R2, including any 64-bit versions. Previous versions include version 3.2.0, which is the driver for the PD-700 on Windows 2000 and Windows XP, and version 101107, which is the driver for the PD-700II on Windows 2000, Windows XP, and Windows Vista 32-bit.
  4. If at any time during the installation you receive an error message that the "application failed to initialize", you must visit microsoft.com and download the latest updates for your computer. The PetDetect installation requires Microsoft .NET Framework 2.0 or later to initialize. This download is available at microsoft.com, or can be loaded by selecting "Windows Update" in Control Panel. For a direct installation of the Microsoft .NET Framework 2.0 program only, it may be located at http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyID=0856EACB-4362-4B0D-8EDDAAB15C5E04F5&displaylang=en

Note the differences of the internal structure to identify whether the printer is the PD-700 or the (newer model) PD-700II. The PD-700 printers have serial numbers starting with 100. The PD-700II printers have serial numbers starting with 280. All PetDetect printers are labeled PD-700 on the lid of the printer.

5. Troubleshooting

My PetDetect PD-700/PD-700II does not print at all. What should I do?

  • Be sure that your printer is properly connected to your computer. Check the power cord. Be sure that the power light is lit on the face of the printer. Reboot the printer by turning off the printer with the on/off switch on the face of the printer, wait 10 seconds and power on again.
  • Check that the settings in your kennel or practice management software are correct (please see the Driver Installation Instructions referenced above).
  • Open the cover and ensure that the spacer is inserted to the right of the media roll or that the two media rolls on the right are taped closed and that the left roll is unwinding from the bottom and is fed under the black spring bar directly in front of the rolls. With the power ON, pull about 3" of media out of the printer and close the lid securely. The printer should feed and cut a section of media.
  • The media roll may have been unevenly wound, causing the roll to become too fat. For printers that are still using three rolls inside the printer, there is a spacer that will help alleviate the problem and remove the need to keep three rolls inside the printer. The right sidewall of the printer can be removed also. Make sure to keep this piece as it may need to be used in the future.
  • There may have been too much media wound onto the media roll. If this is the case, the lid contacts the roll and it cannot advance. Remove two to three feet from the roll and it should start working.
  • Reboot your computer, and recheck the driver settings in the installation guide. If this does not resolve your problem, it may be necessary to reinstall the driver. See the Driver Reinstallation Instructions section above.
If the problem persists, please contact your source of purchase. See Software and Technical Support Assistance for list of contact information.

My PD-700/PD-700II printer jams constantly and the backing is coming off in the printer.

This issue is due to the media being loaded incorrectly. Please be sure that the left roll in the printer is feeding from the bottom and that it's fed under the black spring bar directly in front of the roll (see illustration above). If the media is fed over the bar, it will jam every time. This bar may be removed permanently to prevent future jamming by improper loading. The bar is affixed to the printer by clips on each side of the bar and the clips, springs and bar may be removed and discarded.

How do I maintain my PD-700/PD-700II printer?

The PD-700 requires periodic maintenance. Maintenance will ensure the print quality remains sharp and prints without lines through the print job, help to prevent periodic jamming, and keep the cutter functioning properly.
  1. Turn off the printer and open the cover.
  2. Remove the PetDetect rolls and wipe any dust or contaminants from the inside.
  3. Apply isopropyl alcohol to a soft lint free cloth and clean the rubber roller on the lid, the print head on the body of the printer located directly under the PetDetect label, and any other residue or contaminants inside the printer.
  4. Clean any yellow or sticky residue from the cutting blade directly above the print head and from any other area it appears. Keeping your printer clean will ensure proper printing and operation.

Sometimes my PD-700/PD-700II printer prints "blank sections" or it prints "spotty".

  • This could be caused by a dirty print head or the printer itself being dirty. Please refer to the regular maintenance instructions above.
  • This could be caused by an incorrect driver setting. Please refer to the driver reinstallation instructions above.

I have Windows® 7, Windows Server® 2008 R2 or a Windows 64-bit operating system and the driver won't install.

  • You could be using an old version of the driver. Please call 1-888-443-2263 or send an email to service@petdetect.com to request the latest driver which includes support for the latest operating systems and 64-bit operating systems.

My fonts do not appear properly in Kennelsoft. Why?

Computers that do not have Microsoft Word installed may not recognize the font associated with KennelSoft. To fix this problem, please download each of the following files to the Fonts directory on your computer (e.g., C:\Windows\Fonts): This new font will now be recognized by your computer and your PetDetect collars and labels will now print properly.

My problem is not answered here.

Please contact your source of purchase. See Software and Technical Support Assistance for list of contact information.

6. Warranty

Any PetDetect PD-700 printer purchased before 10/15/2007 carried a 1-year warranty, and is now out of warranty. The PetDetect PD-700II printer introduced on 10/15/2007 includes a 3-year warranty. The printer model may be identified by referring to the illustration above. Both the PD-700 and PD-700II printers carry the same label on the cover of the printer--"PetDetect PD-700 Identity creator".

Please contact your kennel or practice management software provider for product support, including warranty questions and service.

PetDetect will not warrant any printers purchased outside of our authorized distribution network. Only the exclusive PetDetect Collar Media is designed to work with our system. Any use of other thermal media products used in our printers voids all printer warranty.
